Ductless Air Conditioners

Ductless air conditioners are an excellent alternative to central air conditioners. When your home doesn’t have existing duct work that can accommodate a central air conditioning system, you can count on Ductless Air to help you choose a ductless air conditioner that suits your needs.

Ductless air conditioners are easy to install and require no construction at all. All that’s needed to connect the indoor and outdoor units is a 4 inch hole in an exterior wall. This hole allows the tubing and wires to pass through and join the two components. Ductless air conditioning systems are also known as ductless split systems because the two units are split up. The same is actually true for central air conditioning systems where the large outdoor unit and the indoor blower system work together to cool your home.

Ductless air conditioning maintenance is one of the most important aspects of having a ductless air conditioner. When your ductless air conditioning system is operating efficiently due to regular maintenance, then it uses less energy to cool your home. It uses energy to performa all of its necessary functions and this energy usage can add up. By using less energy you will save money on your energy bills each month.

All of the heat pumps described here can be categorized as air source heat pumps, which means they strip heat from the air in order to provide heat. When it comes to air source heat pumps, there are many different types of heat pumps and systems to choose from.

Split System Heat Pump

A split system heat pump has two parts: an inside unit called the air handler and an outside unit called the condenser. This is the same set up you’d find with a central air conditioning system.

The difference between a central air conditioning system and a split system heat pump is that it also has coils that absorb heat (evaporator coils) and that release heat (condenser coils) in both the inside and outside units. A split system heat pump can absorb heat from inside or outside, and release heat inside or outside. It can remove heat to cool your space or add heat to warm it up.

Packaged Types Of Heat Pumps (also known as rooftop units)

Packaged heat pumps work the same way as other heat pumps with one major difference: All the coils are located in a single “packaged” unit that often sits on the roof of a building. As you might have guessed, this is why they’re also referred to as rooftop units.

Heated or cooled air is delivered inside a building via ductwork that passes through the roof and/or walls, which is incredibly efficient.

So, why is a packaged heat pump a more attractive choice than a split system heat pump? Basically, it comes down to the space you have. If your rood if easily accessible, packaged heat pumps can be more affordable to install and maintain. However, they are not as efficient in buildings more than 10 stories tall.

Ducted Or Ductless Heat Pumps

Sometimes using ducts is impractical and inefficient, especially when renovating an older building or when adding heating and cooling to a space like a garage or home addition.

In that case, a ductless mini-split heat pump can be a great solution. Instead of ducts, these systems transfer heat through refrigerant lines to a fan/coil unit installed in the wall or ceiling. The downside of these units is that you need the fan/coil unit in every room that needs climate control. Also, they don’t remove humidity as effectively as a ducted system.

Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Heat Pumps

These types of heat pumps are also referred to as VRF heat pumps. They’re one of the newer types of heat pumps with newer technology. VRF heat pump systems are more energy efficient, quieter, and can precisely control comfort conditions in multiple zones with different heating and/or cooling needs. In fact, they can provide both heat and cooling to different areas at the same time!

When it comes time to replace ductless air conditioners and other heating and air conditioning units our customer often ask us: What is a heat pump? Simply put, a heat pump is like a ductless air conditioner in style and functionality, but it also provides heating on top of air conditioning. Heat pumps uses mechanical energy to remove heat from the air and move it either inside or outside, depending on whether your space needs heat or air conditioning.

What Is A Heat Pump? It’s A Lot Of Things!

Like ductless air conditioners, heat pumps are an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly HVAC choice for your home. They don’t burn natural gas to produce the heat they supply, but rather strip if from the air and concentrate it for use in your home.

Heat pumps have been used for quite a long time in areas that don’t get extreme cold like Toronto. Temperatures in Toronto frequently drop below 20 degrees, but heat pump technology has come a long way and can now function well in colder weather.

How Do Heat Pumps Work?

A heat pump is basically an air conditioner that can also work in reverse to provide heat. Explaining them doesn’t get much more straightforward than that.

In warm weather, the heat pump absorbs heat from the air inside and moves it outside, thereby providing air conditioning. In cooler weather, the heat pump provides heat by removing heat from the air outside and moving it inside. This idea may seem to defy logic… removing heat from outside in cold weather? The fact is, even in cold weather, there is always heat energy in the air. There’s just less of it than there is in the hot weather. That’s why heat pumps are most efficient in milder climates. The colder it is outside, the harder the heat pump has to work to absorb heat energy and transfer it inside the space.

However, as mentioned, heat pump technology has improved so much that they can even efficiently provide heat in places like Toronto and the GTA.

As any homeowner in Toronto and the GTA already knows, the better you maintain an appliance, the longer it lasts. Ductless air conditioners are no different. Get to know some of the basics of DIY ductless maintenance below for some simple tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your air conditioner.

The Basics Of DIY Ductless Maintenance

A ductless air conditioner isn’t too tricky to maintain, as long as you don’t forget about it. Neglecting your responsibilities is a great way to shave years off your unit.

For starters, be sure to keep an eye on your ductless air conditioner. Think of it like the lint trap in you dryer, you’ll want to keep it clear of any dust and debris that might clog it up over time. And that includes taking a look outside too at the condenser for any ice build up that may occur over time. Just make sure you turn the unit off before you go poking around trying to keep it clean. This is for your own safety of course.

Another common form of DIY ductless maintenance is actually very easy since it requires very little effort. Keep things away from your indoor and outdoor units. Sounds simple but people forget that ductless is all about airflow. Block the flow, and you force your ductless unit to work harder than it should – which leads to bigger problems later.

A few other DIY ductless maintenance tips include cleaning certain elements of the unit itself, but you really shouldn’t be doing this yourself unless you have some experience. Hiring a professional to take a look once every year or two is the best way to prolong your ductless unit without making things worse or voiding the warranty.

Not having air conditioning in this city really isn’t an option when summer comes around. Temperatures climb into the 30s, and that’s not counting the humidity. This isn’t just uncomfortable, but it can actually be a hazard for those in your home as well if you have your parents or pets living with you. Here’s what you need to know about ductless in Toronto and the GTA.

Why Ductless In Toronto And The GTA Makes Sense

Living in a city of this size has its challenges, but homes come in all shapes and sizes. Older homes may not have the open concept floor plan interior designers are always raving about, but so what. The thing you should be focusing on is staying warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Ductless is a great way to do exactly that.

For starters, these units are designed for spot cooling, which is perfect for older homes and condos. By installing one unit in a living room, bedroom or other commonly used area of your home; you can comfortably control the temperature all summer long. You see, ductless units draw in air from a condenser outside your home for redistribution. Since it is only cooling a given area, it doesn’t need to draw a large amount of power – saving you from costly energy bills. Plus, unlike a central air conditioning, ductless doesn’t lose any of the cool air it produces through vents or ductwork in your home. Overall, you can’t go wrong with ductless in Toronto and the GTA, as long as you have it professionally installed.

Hi, my name is Chris. I ran a small ad agency with a few people I worked with over the years. Originally, it was just a few of us, but before I retired we had successfully grown the agency to 15 people. One secret no one told me about was the value in keeping staff comfortable at work. This is where professional ductless installation was so important, but I’ll get to that shortly.

In the beginning, working long hours didn’t seem like a big deal, but as more bodies filled our office, we quickly realized that our older building just wasn’t great for ventilation and keeping people at the right temperature. Our building was pretty old, and as a new business owner I just didn’t have the money to remodel and put in central air conditioning and all the ductwork that goes along with it.

Instead, I mentioned my problem to a friend of mine, and they recommended calling Ductless Air for ductless installation. After talking on the phone a bit and explaining my situation, they recommended booking a consultation onsite to take a look. The technician showed up the very next day and was great. Really seemed to know their stuff and informed me about the benefits of ductless air conditioning in an office space like mine.

Long story short, Ductless Air performed the ductless installation and my office morale went way up. People didn’t complain anymore and we went on to enjoy our time in that office for a few more years until we moved on to bigger and better things. I definitely recommend Ductless Air for ductless installation, maintenance, repairs, whatever… they’re great! From start to finish, they did an awesome job and we’re always there when I needed them.

Professional Ductless Installation Experts

After more than 30 years, we still take pride in hearing positive feedback like Chris’ story above. It’s really not just about skill that makes Ductless Air stand out from the competition, it’s our dedication to customer service.

At Ductless Air, we’ve seen, installed, and repaired it all when it comes to HVAC. Whether it’s an older office building you need to keep cool or your furnace stops working one cold winter’s night, rest assured, our team is always up to any challenge you may have. Give us a call at 647-547-9207 to learn more about ductless installation. We’re available 24/7 to answer your call. Providing you with peace of mind is our priority.

It’s no secret Toronto and the GTA can get pretty uncomfortable in the summer. To combat the rising temperatures, you might be wondering about upgrading your A/C. Good idea, but it’s important to know what you’re getting yourself into. Take a look at the benefits of ductless mini-split air conditioners.

Here’s What You Need To Know About The Benefits Of Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners

Energy Efficient

First and foremost, mini-splits are much better at using energy when they are installed properly. This is great for your monthly energy bill. Less power used means a smaller bill. And since it’s ductless, no energy is lost or wasted. What’s not to like?

Designed For Smaller Spaces

Let’s face it, open concept design wasn’t as popular in older homes as it is today. This is perfect for mini-splits. These guys work best to cool a given area of your home. Living rooms, recrooms and bedrooms are the popular areas of a home where mini-splits really shine.

Cost Effective

Sure, a window air conditioner might save you a few bucks, but it’s also going to pull more energy, leak air, and not give you the same production that a mini-split can provide. One of the most important benefits of ductless mini-split air conditioners is that they won’t cost you a fortune compared to the alternatives.

Central air is probably your best bet, but that’s only if you have the existing ductwork in place throughout your home. If not, it could be quite costly to setup a central system along with the correct ductwork to support it.

Now That You’ve Seen A Few Benefits Of Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners…

Just do yourself a favour and make sure you hire a professional to install it. This really isn’t a DIY thing, unless you have some experience with installing ductless systems.

At Ductless Air, our team of professionals has been helping Toronto and the GTA for more than 30 years now. That includes all HVAC installation, maintenance, and repairs. Rest assured we’ve seen it all – which is why we know the value in getting the job done right the first time. Nothing is worse than knowing the benefits of ductless mini-split air conditioners and then having any “handyman” poorly install it. The wrong installation can leave you with a unit that is the wrong size for your home, leaks that let in outside air or just compromise the integrity of a good mini-split. If you’re looking to have one installed, or learn more about if a mini-split air conditioner is right for you, please contact us at 647-547-9207. We always put customer service first, so helping you make informed decisions about HVAC is a big part of what we do.

You may or may not have heard this before, but ductless air is the best and most affordable cooling solution for old Toronto homes. Now, if your home has been renovated and has a furnace with existing ductwork then a central air conditioner might make more sense for you. But, if you have a boiler with radiators in every room making the switch to ductwork isn’t cheap.

That’s where ductless air comes into the equation. A ductless air conditioning unit doesn’t need ductwork to operate, which you may have guessed from the name itself. That means that installation is much cheaper and much easier.

A ductless unit itself is also much cheaper than a central air conditioner, and much cheaper to maintain and repair overall.

Ductless Air For The Win

We’ve been working in Toronto and the GTA for over 30 years, installing ductless air conditioning units, heat pumps, central air conditioning units, furnaces, boilers and lots of other HVAC products and accessories. We’ve seen it all and from experience, ductless units are an excellent solution to any Toronto home, even those that already have ductwork.

Ductless air can supplement any central air conditioning system if there are room in your home that don’t get the cooling you need them to. Ductless air conditioning units also don’t require extensive construction, so you won’t be bogged down by costs or ripping out piping and radiators, putting up new drywall, patching the seams, sanding, applying primer, applying paint, etc.

Construction isn’t fun to live through, which is just another reason why installing a ductless air conditioner is a great idea.

Here’s why Steve and Cheryl bought a ductless air conditioner.

Steve and Cheryl had lived in their Toronto home for past 35 years. They’ve paid off their mortgage long ago and seen housing prices rise around them. They’ve experienced many ups and downs in their neighbourhood and in Toronto as a whole, but never had the urge to move.

Their home was always heated by a boiler and radiator system, and they never really used an air conditioner much, although they always had a window unit in their bedroom for really hot summer days. As Steve and Cheryl got older they, like many people, ran into a few different medical issues. One of these issues was asthma, which for a few years they had no issues with treating. However, as they got older the humidity that came with hot summer days slowly became too much for them and they soon realized that they needed a way to rid their home of the heat and humidity in order to ease their breathing.

It Was Time For A Ductless Air Conditioner

Being long retired they hadn’t really budgeted for the cost of installing ductwork in their old home to accommodate a central air conditioner. They also knew they needed something much better than a window air conditioner.

Steve and Cheryl called us up one day to see what the best solution for their needs was. It was apparent to us right away that they needed a ductless air conditioner. A ductless air conditioner was a much more efficient option than their window unit and it was capable of removing the humidity as well as the heat from their home.

Overall, a ductless air conditioner was within their budget and was a great solution to help with their asthma during the hottest days of summer. In speaking with them, they also realized that they liked the fact that the ductless unit circulated and filtered the air, so they opted for a heat pump that would work in both the summer and winter months.

After providing a free quote and setting them up with a payment plan to suit their budget, we installed a new heat pump that would keep the air in their home clean and crisp all year round.

It’s stories like these that really make us proud to work in Toronto and help our neighbours and customers improve their lifestyle.

So, it’s time to replace your old ductless unit with a shiny new one. Or, maybe you’re tired of sweating it out all summer without air conditioning. Or, you’ve had enough with high energy bills caused by your window air conditioner. Regardless of your reasons, it’s time to get a new ductless unit for your home, but where do you start?

A Ductless Unit For All Seasons

It might seem like there are endless options when it comes to ductless air conditioners, so where should you start? Prior to selecting any brands or even discussing the size and output of units, we always ask if our customers want to use it for heating and cooling or just cooling. This will help us narrow down the types of units available for your specific situation.

Heat pumps are a type of ductless unit that can also supplement your main heating system in cooler months and in the winter time. For example, if your home is heated by radiators and a boiler you likely don’t get very much air circulation, but a heat pump can fix that. It can provide heat to assist your boiler, as well as circulate the air in your home.

If you’re just interested in cooling your home, the a straight ductless air conditioner might be the best solution. They’re more affordable than heat pumps because they don’t include the technology necessary to provide heating.

Ductless Air Can Help Find The Right Ductless Unit
